Where Should I Take My Newborn Photos?

Client Resources

When it comes to choosing where you to take newborn photos, there are so many things I love about both in-home and outdoor newborn photo sessions.  I will try to help you decide what is the best fit for your family.

Does one work better for your schedule?  If there isn’t a clear answer based on scheduling, then I would think about how much your home/nursery means to you.  If you have put a lot of time and effort into decorating, them then you may want to do the in-home session.  If you don’t care that much about capturing your home decor and you love the outdoors, then I would go with an outdoor session.  Check out my Client Resource Blogs to help you plan your newborn photos.

In-Home Newborn Photos

In-home sessions not only document your new family member, but also where you brought them home to.  We will document natural moments of your family with your new addition in your natural environment.  For years to come you will be able to look back and see the nursery that you spent all that time decorating while you waited for your baby to arrive.

These sessions take place in your home so you don’t have to worry about packing everything up and getting out of the house on time to get to a location.  If the baby needs to nurse, no problem; you have your rocking chair right there!  These sessions typically take place mid-morning, which is often a less cranky time for older siblings.  In-home sessions work perfectly with my natural lifestyle approach to newborn sessions.  Do think an in-home newborn session might be the right fit for your family?  Check out FAQ about my in-home newborn sessions

Newborn Studio Photos

Newborn studio photos are not something that I offer.  My sessions are baby led.  I don’t put babies into positions that you wouldn’t naturally have them in at home.  If you are looking for posed photos of your newborn, then a studio photographer may be the right fit for you.

Outdoor Newborn Photos

Like with many other businesses, the pandemic created a push for me to pivot.  Prior to the pandemic, my newborn sessions were all in-home sessions.  I started offering outdoor newborn photo sessions and they have been my silver lining of the pandemic.  They are now one of my favorite types of sessions.  There is something so beautiful about a family snuggling a new baby surrounded by tall grass or wild flowers.

Does your family love to spend time outdoors?  Does your house not get a lot of natural light?  Are you not particularly attached to your interior design?  If you answered yes to any of these, then an outdoor newborn session may be a good fit for your family.  You can see some of my outdoor newborn sessions on my newborn website page and get answers to FAQ about outdoor newborn sessions on the blog

My 3 Favorite Outdoor Locations to Take Newborn Photos

These are my top 3 favorites, but for other location suggestions check out my client resource blogs.

Heard Farm, Wayland Massachusetts

I think Heard Farm is my all time favorite location for outdoor newborn, maternity and family sessions.  It has beautiful open fields with tall grass that sometimes has wild flowers, depending on the season.  This location does involve a short walk from the parking lot to get to the field; I recommend bringing a stroller so you aren’t carrying the car seat for the walk.

Cow Common, Wayland Massachusetts

In the fall, Cow Common has gorgeous foliage.  The large tree in the middle of the field makes for great shade for photos.  The parking lot is right next to the field.

Barber Reservation, Sherborn Massachusetts

This location gets beautiful morning light, which can be great for those that evening doesn’t work.  The small field area is right next to the parking lot.

My 3 Favorite In-home Locations to Take Newborn Photos

Where we take photos in your home will depend on what rooms get the most light.  When I get to your house, I will have you show me around and then I will let you know which rooms I think will work best for photos.

 Nursery

This is often a room that new parents have recently spent a lot of time working on and a room that you will spend a lot of time rocking, soothing, feeding, changing, etc your baby.

Bedroom

A bed is a great spot for the whole family to cuddle up together.  It is also a great place to get some photos of your baby alone on the bed.

Living room

This is another room that you will naturally spend a lot of time in together as a family.  We can get photos of the family all together on the couch and oftentimes big siblings are comfortable playing in the living room, which can be a great way to give them a break while parents take photos with the baby.
