Liz from the Sleepy Baker made a beautiful ice skating cake for my daughter last year. We have talked over social media and email, but never met in person before now. I had such a fun morning watching Liz take a cake from start to finish. Along the way, we chatted about our lives and businesses. If you are looking for a beautiful and delicious cake for a special occasion, the Sleepy Baker is your girl. She also has cupcake decorating kits!
What brought you to opening The Sleepy Baker in Natick ?
I was working a traditional office job, but was always artsy. When I became a mom, I started making cakes for my kids’ birthdays and quickly realized this could be the artistic outlet I had been craving. Through the years, I started to get more creative with their cakes and friends started to ask me to make cakes for their kids. It dawned on me that I could be onto something. I started posting pictures of my cakes on Facebook, built a solid presence on social media and started getting more and more word-of-mouth orders. After about 4 years of waking up at 5am, going to Boston for work, coming home to take care of the kids and working on cakes until late at night, I took the leap – I went full-time and figured if this was going to work as a business, now was a good time to try it. That was ten years ago and I haven’t looked back!
What is something that makes The Sleepy Baker special?
I will not refuse any project based on design or concept. I am always willing to try anything and will only say no to a project if I’m booked for that date.
What might people not know about you or your business that you would want them to know?
I have no formal artistic, culinary or business training. I learned it all along the way and continue to learn!
Do you have any holiday specials?
Thanksgiving & December holiday pies! I also make truffles which make wonderful holiday gifts for teachers, mail carriers, etc.
What is something you love about Natick or your favorite spot in Natick?
I love how the community supports small businesses and have certainly felt the support throughout the pandemic. Oftentimes, my customers tell me how strongly they feel about hiring me because I am a small business and that means the world to me.
My favorite spots in Natick are the trails. I love to hike and run the trails and explore areas I didn’t even know existed before. It’s a wonderful escape from my non-stop work days and gives me a recharge that allows me to keep on pressing forward.
