How to Pose Newborns for Photos

Client Resources

When my oldest daughter was born, she went into the NICU.  The week after we got home from the hospital, we had a photographer come to our house.  She did a posed newborn session.  I remember watching her manipulate my little baby into poses and place her into wooden bowls.  My gut feeling is that I just wanted to grab my baby and hold her.  The only photos that I printed from that session are ones where I was holding her.

When I started my business, I knew I didnt want to do posed newborn sessions; some people do it beautifully, but it’s just not for me.  I want to capture natural moments of families snuggling and enjoying their new little one.  I don’t use props or do newborn posing.  If that’s what you are looking for I wouldn’t be the right fit.  I will get shots of just your little one in a more natural way.  To learn more about my newborn sessions check out FAQ to in home newborn photo sessions.

Lifestyle Sessions vs. Posed Sessions

When choosing a photographer for your newborn photo session, you first need to decide what type of session you are looking for.  My sessions are lifestyle.  This means that they are very natural.  I will verbally guide you through interacting with your baby.  We will also get some photos of just your baby, but these are with baby-led posing.  We will only do what your baby wants to do.  I will never put your baby into a position that they wouldn’t be in naturally themselves or with you holding them.

Some people prefer posed newborn sessions.  These sessions typically take place in a studio.  Your photographer will be moving your baby into different positions and will use different wraps and colored backgrounds.  I prefer a more natural look and feel to sessions.  Posed newborn sessions are not something that I offer.  I am happy to refer you to another photographer if this is what you are looking for.

What is Baby-led Posing?

I always want my photos to look as natural as possible.  This means that I use baby-led posing.  I will never put your baby in a position that they wouldn’t naturally go in.  Your baby leads the session.   This means if baby wants to be held and rocked we will do that.  If your baby is relaxed or asleep then we will put baby on a bed or crib and I will photograph them how they naturally are.

Posing Baby Safely

Your baby’s safety is of utmost concern.  This is another reason that I love baby-led posing.  Your baby will be safely in your arms the majority of the session.  If we take photos of baby on your bed, I will make sure that baby is in the middle of the bed and you will be within arms reach.
