I photograph families outdoors all year round. If you are up for braving the cold, I will be out there with you! Did you know that winter light is the most golden light of the year? Cold weather doesn’t mean you have to miss out on capturing beautiful family moments or special milestones. With a little preparation, winter sessions can create stunning images with unique backdrops of snow-covered landscapes, frosty trees, or even cozy indoor vibes. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your cold-weather photography session.
1. Dress Warmly and Stylishly
Layers are your best friend for outdoor sessions in the cold. Think thermal base layers, warm sweaters, scarves, and stylish coats. Don’t forget gloves, hats, and thick socks to keep extremities warm. Neutral tones, jewel colors, and textured fabrics photograph beautifully in winter settings. Coordinate your outfits with your family but avoid being overly matchy-matchy. Put extra layers under those cute outfits you picked out. You can be sure I will be attending your cold weather family photo session with my long undies on under my clothes
2. Choose Footwear Wisely
While fashion is important, staying comfortable and warm is even more critical. Opt for boots that are both stylish and functional. If the ground is snowy or muddy, waterproof options will be your savior. Consider bringing a change of shoes for walking to and from the shoot location.
3. Bring Warm Accessories
A warm scarf, a cute hat, or matching gloves can serve as both practical and visually appealing accessories. These small details add personality to your photos while keeping you warm. You will want to have blankets to sit on and wrap up/cuddle in. Blankets can also add great texture to photos and make for cuddly photos.
4. Prep for Red Noses and Rosy Cheeks
Cold weather can lead to flushed faces and runny noses. Pack tissues, lip balm, and a light moisturizer to prevent dry skin. If you’re wearing makeup, opt for products that won’t smudge or run easily.
5. Hand Warmers Are a Lifesaver
Tuck disposable hand warmers into your pockets or gloves for a quick way to stay warm between shots. Bonus: They’re great for keeping kids happy and comfortable too.
6. Plan for Movement
Poses that encourage movement, like walking, snuggling, or playful interactions, can keep everyone warm and create candid, joyful images. It’s a win-win!
7. Timing is Everything
Winter days are shorter, so plan your session to make the most of the available light. early afternoon often provides the best natural lighting and slightly warmer temperatures.
8. Embrace the Season
Lean into the winter theme by incorporating seasonal props or activities. Think blankets, mugs of hot cocoa, or even a snowball fight! These elements add a cozy and playful touch to your photos.
9. Bring a warm drink
Pack some warm drinks in a thermos to help warm your family from the inside. We can take breaks to warm up in the car and drive some hot coco.
10. Consider an Indoor Option
If the weather is too extreme, an indoor location can be a fantastic alternative. Cozy setups with natural light can capture the warmth of your family’s connection without braving the cold.
