As a lifestyle family photographer in Massachusetts, I often find myself behind the camera, capturing cherished moments for families. But when it comes to photographing friends, it brings a different level of joy and connection. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a dear friend who needed a little convincing to step in front of the lens for a maternity session.

We kicked things off in the spring with a maternity photo session at the stunning Wellesley College, surrounded by blooming daffodils and blossoming trees. My friend was pregnant and juggling her three energetic daughters, who were excited to be a part of this special moment. At first, she hesitated—feeling unsure about being in front of the camera—but I reassured her that this was a celebration of her journey into motherhood once again.

As we wandered through the campus, laughter filled the air. I aimed to capture not just posed portraits but the pure, candid joy of motherhood—the tender moments, the playful interactions, and the love that flowed between them. Each shot reflected their unique personalities, and the result was a gallery bursting with warmth and happiness.

Fast forward to summer, and we did an outdoor newborn photo session. This time, I decided to bring my three daughters along for the outdoor shoot. The location was a perfect spot—an open field  behind their home with golden sunlight filtering through the trees. What followed was a delightful chaos that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

With all the girls running, playing, and laughing together, it was a whirlwind of energy. I embraced the spontaneity; my camera clicked away, capturing the moments of pure joy—the girls chasing each other, spontaneous hugs, and bursts of laughter.

While it was certainly hectic, the beautiful chaos reflected the reality of family life. The candid shots from that day spoke volumes about their bond—the little glances, the playful tackles, and the occasional moments of quiet connection in between the laughter.

As a photographer, I aim to encapsulate authentic moments, and shooting for a friend adds a layer of intimacy that makes the experience all the more special. The connection we share made every shot feel meaningful, every burst of laughter feel genuine. It’s a reminder of the beautiful journey of motherhood, filled with challenges but also overflowing with love.

Reflecting on these sessions, I feel grateful not just for the opportunity to photograph my friend and her family, but for the reminder of how precious these moments are. It’s a joy to witness the love and laughter that fill their lives, and I’m honored to capture it.
