6 reasons to have a indoor family photo session

Client Resources

When you think of family photos, you may envision photos outdoors during warm summer months or crisp fall days. However, indoor family photo sessions all year round can be just as special. My goal is not only for you to walk away from your photo sessions with cherished family photos, but to also have had a great time and make memories during the session.

When families want to do an indoor photo session, it can be a wonderful way to not only capture your family during this season of life, but the special place you call home where you and your family are building everyday memories. Here are some of my favorite benefits of an in home family photography session in the Metrowest area:

1. Giving yourself and your children memories of the place they are being raised.

Homes are such an important part of our everyday lives. We don’t often think to photograph them, but having beautiful family photos in a place that shapes you and your family can be a gift later in life when you are thinking back on past memories. I believe that pictures have the unique ability to freeze time, allowing us to stop and appreciate the special moments in our lives. I want my pictures to allow you to look back for years to come and, even for a moment, remember what it feels like to be in this season of your family’s life.  Being able to look back on photos of you and your family in the spaces you cooked together, played games together, read stories together, had heartfelt conversations, and lived your everyday moments can be such a gift.

2. Temperature controlled

Choosing an indoor family photo session means that we don’t have to worry about the weather and can schedule photos any time throughout the year.  You can avoid braving the extreme cold, extreme heat, rainy days and opt for an in-home session. While we do reschedule for rain, New England weather can be unpredictable changing from one day to the next. If you’d prefer to plan out exactly how you’d like things, indoor session provide a sense of comfort knowing what to expect.

I work with families in the Metro West Boston area include: Natick, Needham, Newton, Wellesley, Wayland, Weston, Sherborn, Sudbury, Southborough, Medfield, Medway, Holliston, and Framingham.

3. Comfort level

Some kids have a hard time being out of their comfort zone. Taking photos in a familiar place, especially the comfort of home can make sessions easier for kids who do best in comfortable settings. Kids can feel comfort in being in their own space.

As a lifestyle photographer, I love capturing natural moments and families and making memories. When I photograph you in your home, there’s less warm-up time to get those natural moments.

4. indoor family photo sessions are easy for Schedules for little ones

In-home sessions are often relaxed and easy to get ready for, as there’s no travel involved. If you have a young child who is on a nap schedule or who isn’t and can be unpredictable so it’s harder to plan, in home can make things a bit easier and feel more relaxed.

5. Capture a special family activity

As a lifestyle photographer, I love capturing natural moments. I’ve had sessions where families who love to bake together incorporate some time in the session to bake together, so they can capture a special family activity. For newborn sessions, we often capture photos of families reading together or cuddling.  There are so many special activities that can be captured that will serve as special memories of family time like playing games, crafting together, cooking, or anything specific that builds connection that you want to capture.

6. Family pets

It’s no secret that I love including dogs in daily photos which works great for outdoor or indoor sessions, but if you have other types of pets, they typically only are included for indoor sessions. Since these are lifestyle shoots, we may see them in the background, or cuddled up with someone or playing.

A few tips for indoor family photo sessions:

The best times for in-home sessions can vary based on when you get the best natural light. I work with a flash, but if your home has natural light, I’ll work with you to find the best time of day to schedule photos.

Think about where you will want to capture memories together. While we’ll get some posed photos during the session, I absolutely love capturing the natural moments in your space. Think about where you’ll want to capture these special memories. Cooking or baking together in the kitchen? Playing in your family room? Let me know in advance if there are any must have photos you’d like to capture, as most will be natural moments, but we want to get all of your planend ones as well!
