Below are some ideas and suggestions for what to wear for your Boston Metro West family session.  In the end what is most important is that everyone is comfortable and happy with what they are wearing so that we can capture great family moments. We don’t want to start with unhappy kids because they don’t like what they are wearing.  I usually suggest starting with mom finding an outfit that she feels her best in and then build the families outfits off of that. Coordinate colors don’t match

When deciding what to wear to your family photo session, pick a few colors and choose clothes that fit into the color scheme.  Too much matching makes it hard to see individuals in the photos. You want to color coordinate not match.

Pick your photo session outfit colors

When picking a color pallet for your outfits I would suggest neutrals like gray, navy, tan, white, ivory, and pastels.  Avoid neon and super bright colors, as they might create an unusual looking color cast on your families skin. Soft light colors and neutrals lead to the light and airy look of photos that I love.

 

Pop of color/pattern

Have one person add a pop of color. Too many non neutral colors can be distracting, but one person with a pop of color adds damention to your family photos. Choose mostly solids or simple patterns.  One person wearing a pattern can add an interesting element to the photo, but too many people wearing different patterns can be distracting

Avoid all white or black outfits

Wearing all white or black can lead to losing detail of the clothing in images. Off whites, creams and ivory look great in photos! 

Add texture to your family photo session outfits

Different textures adds interesting elements to your photographs.  You can do this through textured fabric,  layers or adding a necklace or scarf to your outfit.

Dress for mom

If you hate dresses, then this recommendation may not be for you.   If you do wear dresses though, or are indifferent to dresses I recommend wearing a long maxi type dress. Long flowy dresses give great movement and texture to your photos.  They are flattering for almost all body types.   I always get so excited when I arrive at a session and see that the Mom has chosen a long flowy dress.  If you need help finding a dress I am happy to send you a few links of suggestions.

Comfortable

You want everyone to be comfortable and able to move around easily.  We will do a lot of moving around and playing during the session so you want to make sure everyone is comfortable. This included thinking about shoe choices.
