Our Summer 2020

My Family

As summer comes to a close, we are looking toward the uncertain future of what remote learning holds for our household.  I can tell my 7 year old is nervous because she has so many questions.  Questions that I can’t answer because I don’t know what is happening yet.  I know that we will figure it out together and get into a new normal routine, but right now I want to hold on to the last few moments of summer.

This summer was not at all what we expected it to be.  We missed out on many things we had been looking forward to, but I feel like we have been given a gift of time together.  Had it been a typical summer, I would have been dropping my oldest off at multiple camps and my middle daughter off at preschool two mornings a week.

Was this summer overwhelming?  Definitely, but we also had so many great moments together.  I found that the greatest moments came at unexpected times.  I felt pressure to plan fun at home activities for the girls, but when I didn’t they came up with their own.  My 7 year old, who before the Pandemic had basically stopped doing imaginative play, will now run around the backyard playing pirates with her sisters.  They have created their own art projects and science experiments. They love to play restaurant and make their own lunch.  My favorite activity they created is Spa day.  We do each other’s nails and they play with my hair and rub my feet :).

I feel like we all grieved for the summer we thought we would have, but right now as I am faced with the uncertainty of remote learning, I want to savor and celebrate the summer that we ended up having.
